How healthy is your heart?

February is American Heart Health month and with heart disease being the number one killer of Americans…what are you doing to help your heart?? Do you have high cholesterol? Did your father have a heart attack? Do you think heart disease just runs in the family?? Heart disease does run in families because families eat the same way. You can break the cycle, make healthier choices and change your fate.

You can lower your cholesterol and change your heart health just by adding more whole grains such as brown rice, oats, barley, millet and beans to your diet. Beans are a great source of fiber and protein but without the saturated fat and cholesterol. Start by adding a few vegan meals to your diet a week. Not only is it healthier, but you will find it is more economical.

If you do eat meat or chicken at a meal, make sure those portions are a side dish size and are balanced with grains, vegetables and soups. Start making these changes today and you will change the direction of your health and your life!
